If you do not want to wake up early for a full-day trip, a Komodo Sunset Trip is a good option.
You leave Labuan Bajo in the afternoon. The trip is shorter. You can enjoy the islands, have some time for snorkeling, and finish the day watching the sunset from the boat.
For most travelers, it is a relaxed way to spend an afternoon in لابوان باجو.
What is the usual route?
A popular sunset route is:
Labuan Bajo → Kelor Island → Menjerite → Kalong Island → Sunset → Labuan Bajo
The exact route can change depending on the boat, weather, and sea conditions.
Usually, the boat leaves around 2:00–3:00 PM and returns to Labuan Bajo in the evening.
جزيرة كيلور
Kelor is usually the first stop.
There is a short walk up the hill. From the top, you can see the small island and the surrounding sea.
The climb is not very long, but the path can be slippery. Good sandals or proper shoes are recommended.
If you want nice photos, late afternoon is much more comfortable than midday.
Menjerite
After Kelor, the boat continues to Menjerite.
This is a nice place for a short snorkeling stop.
The water is usually clear, with small fish and coral around the snorkeling area.
If you do not want to snorkel, you can simply stay on the boat and enjoy the view.
جزيرة كالونج
This is the main highlight of the sunset trip.
The boat stops in the area around Kalong Island before sunset.
You do not need to hike.
Just sit on the boat, relax, and wait for the sky to change color.
When it starts getting dark, hundreds or even thousands of flying foxes can be seen leaving the trees.
They fly across the sky in groups as they head toward Flores.
This is why many travelers choose the sunset trip instead of returning to Labuan Bajo directly after snorkeling.
Can you see Komodo dragons?
This depends on the itinerary.
The standard sunset trip usually focuses on Kelor, Menjerite, and Kalong.
It is not normally a Komodo-watching trip.
Some private boats can add جزيرة رينكا, but this needs to be arranged in advance and there may be additional costs.
If seeing Komodo dragons is your main goal, I would recommend a full-day Komodo trip instead.
You will have more time for the ranger visit and other islands.
If your main goal is to enjoy the sea, islands, snorkeling, and sunset, the shorter sunset trip is enough.
How much does a Komodo Sunset Trip cost?
For a sharing trip, a realistic budget is around IDR 600,000–1,200,000 per person, depending on the boat and what is included.
Private trips cost more.
A private boat can cost several million rupiah for the whole boat, depending on the boat type and number of guests.
Before booking, always ask what is included in the price.
For example:
- Boat
- Hotel pickup and drop-off
- Tour guide
- معدات الغطس
- Drinking water
- Entrance or conservation fees
Some packages include these costs. Others charge them separately.
This is important when comparing prices between different operators.
Is the sunset trip worth it?
For me, yes, especially if you have limited time in Labuan Bajo.
It is a good choice if:
- You do not want to wake up early.
- You only have one free afternoon.
- You want a shorter boat trip.
- You enjoy sunset photography.
- You want to combine snorkeling with a sunset experience.
- You are traveling as a couple or small group.
It is also a good option for travelers who have already done a full-day Komodo trip and want something more relaxed on another day.
A few tips from a local tour operator
Ask about the boat first.
A cheap price does not always mean the same experience.
A wooden open-deck boat and a speedboat are very different in terms of comfort and travel time.
Ask about the exact departure time.
Some trips leave at 2:00 PM. Others start around 3:00 PM.
The later the departure, the less time you usually have at the first stops.
Ask about entrance fees.
Do not assume they are included.
Check the total price before you book.
Bring a dry bag.
Keep your phone, camera, wallet, and other important items protected from seawater.
Bring sunscreen.
The afternoon sun in Labuan Bajo can still be strong.
Bring a light jacket.
It can feel windy and cooler when the boat is moving back to Labuan Bajo after sunset.
Do not expect the same sunset every day.
Sometimes the sky is clear and you get strong orange colors.
Sometimes there are clouds.
Weather changes quickly around the islands.
Who should choose this trip?
I usually recommend the sunset trip to travelers who want to enjoy Labuan Bajo without spending a full day on the boat.
If you have never visited Komodo before and want to see the dragons, Padar Island, Pink Beach, and other famous locations, choose a full-day speedboat trip.
But if you simply want a relaxed afternoon with a few beautiful stops and a sunset at sea, the Komodo Sunset Trip is a much easier option.
A simple itinerary would be:
2:00 PM — Pick up from your hotel
2:30 PM — Depart from Labuan Bajo
3:00 PM — Kelor Island
4:00 PM — Menjerite / snorkeling
5:30 PM — Kalong area
Sunset — Watch the flying foxes leave the island
7:00 PM — Return to Labuan Bajo
The exact timing can change depending on the sea and weather.
For a relaxed afternoon, I would choose Kelor → Menjerite → Kalong → Sunset.
You do not need to rush.
You can enjoy the islands, spend some time in the water, and finish the day on the boat while watching the sunset.
That is what makes this trip popular with travelers who want to experience Labuan Bajo without spending the whole day at sea.
